What is Islam
Islam is the second largest religion in the world. Islam is a monolithic faith and calls for faith in only one God whose name is Allah. In Arabic the word Islam means submission and is described as a way of life or religion. Islam is a religion of peace, mercy and forgiveness and has nothing to do with the extremely gave events which have come to be now associated with Islam and Muslims.
For a fifth of the world’s population, Islam is a religion and a complete way of life. Islam is not a new religion. It is the same truth that Allah had revealed through all his prophets to every generation. Muslims believe in all the prophets starting form Adam to Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Elias, Jonah, John, Jesus and Muhammad, peace be upon them all.
Muslims
People who practice Islam are called Muslims. The word Muslim is related to the word Islam and means one who surrenders or submits to Allah. Muslims believe that the purpose of life is to worship Allah. Muslims believe in One, Unique, Incomparable God. Muslims fear Allah and should be the best in morals and manners.
As a Muslim, one should believe in Allah, his Messengers, his Angels, the Quran and the day of judgement. To become a Muslim, one has to first declare their faith by saying the ‘shahada’, which in Islam means the declaration of faith. One declares their faith simply by saying
“There is no god apart from Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God “
By this declaration the believer announces his or her faith in Allah and what was reveal through his messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
After the declaration of faith, Muslims are supposed to follow the other principles of the 5 pillars of Islam which are:-
Shahada – Declaration of Faith
Salat – the five daily prayers of Islam
Sawm – fasting in the month of Ramadan
Zakat – giving of Alms
Hajj – Pilgrimage to Mecca
